Door County Apples are here!

Door County apples are ripening early this year, just like the cherries did earlier in the season.  With apples now in season all I can think of is a nice warm apple pie and caramel apples.  It is true that the fall season has not quite started for us here on the Door Peninsula, but with the cooler air that has just moved in it is hard not to think about all those yummy fall treats.

Most of the local orchards offer both fresh apples and bakery items made from them.  For example, Seaquist Orchards in Ellison Bay offers a great assortment of apples along with many other goodies.  The local farmer’s markets will also have an assortment of apples from smaller growers.

This cooler weather is perfect for baking, which coincides well with the early arrival of apples!  At High Point Inn you can make a pie in your room or simply warm one up from a local bakery.  We even have some extra cinnamon if you need to borrow some!

Welcoming September in Door County

The Door Peninsula has now officially entered into September.  The roads have quieted down and the air has a lighter quality to it.  It is a beautiful time of year to be sure.  There are many ways to enjoy Door County in September, so here are a few tips.

1) Make sure to visit the state parks.  This time of year the parks are beautiful and they are slightly more peaceful.  It is a great time to take a relaxing bike ride or go for a nice hike.

2) Make a point to go see a play.  American Folklore Theater and Peninsula Players both offer great entertainment. Both locations have indoor performance areas, which is great for one of the cooler evenings.

3) Visit all your favorite shops (or discover your favorite shop).  It’s a great time to browse and take your time without having to deal with big crowds.

4) RELAX! The great part about September is there is no need to rush!

We would love to have you come stay with us at High Point Inn this September, we will try to make it as relaxing as possible for you!

The Calmer Side of August in Door County

As the start of school gets nearer and nearer the Door Peninsula is getting calmer.  The weather is still beautiful, and the shops and restaurants are still open.  This is the perfect time to come join us at High Point Inn for a relaxing visit to Door County.

This week and into the weekend it is supposed to be in the 70′s with sunshine all around.  Plus the evenings have been beautiful with the approaching full moon and clear skies.

It is not too late to join us at High Point Inn for this great time!  If you don’t have time this week or the next make sure to check out our Splendor in September package on our website (it’s a great deal!)

A Taste of Door County

Door County has its own unique flavor, and one of the best ways to experience this is to visit the local farmers market.  On Saturdays in Sister Bay at the Corner of the Past Museum there is a farmers market where locals are able to sell produce and other fresh items.

The farmers market is a great way to see what is grown on the Door Peninsula, and to meet some local residents.  The Farmers Market also has featured guests.  This weekend Jeanne Aurelius of Clay Bay Pottery will be there and the following weekend there will be Native American flutes with Mike Farmer.

Once you have some local produce you can come back and relax at High Point Inn and cook up a nice meal in your kitchen, then enjoy the flavors on your own private patio!

An Evening in Fish Creek

From High Point Inn here in Door County it is just a short drive south to Fish Creek.  Fish Creek offers a little more hustle and bustle, which provides a great atmosphere for walking, shopping and people watching.

On a warm evening it is nice to park the car on the north side of town and walk to the restaurants and shops of downtown Fish Creek.  (The sidewalks are even lined with orange and yellow marigolds.)  The shops are conveniently open later and there is also a great variety to choose from.

Fish Creek also has some great places to sit out and have a nice relaxing beverage or dinner.  The other evening I visited The Cookery, which has a great wine bar upstairs and full restaurant downstairs.  The wine bar offers appetizers and a beautiful birds eye view of the water and the sidewalks.

If you get tired of walking there is also a pedicab service in Fish Creek.   Peninsula Pedicabs is just a phone call away for a nice ride through town or back to your car.

An evening in Fish Creek makes for an eventful night, especially at this time of year.  Come join us while the evenings are still warm!

Beating the Back to School Blues in Door County

The stores have taken on their yearly August transformation.  Yellow displays filled with notebooks, pencils, folders and all sorts of back to school goodies are taking over.  But it’s not too late to get the family together for one last trip before the school year begins!

The High Point Inn offers a great place for families to stay.  Our 2 bedroom units offer a nice comfortable area for the whole family to be together.  We also have ping-pong, a game room, more games in the lobby and an indoor and outdoor pool.  Plus there is mini golfing at the Red Putter just a short walk away and fun family restaurants close by.

Make a trip to Door County for a great escape before the school year sets in.  It is a great place to sit back, relax and forget about things for a bit!

There is Music in the Air in Door County!

Door County is known for its art appreciation and for the next couple of weeks music is the focus.  At the Door Community Auditorium the Peninsula Music Festival is going on until August 21st.  The festival has symphonic concerts every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and features special guest artists.

Also this weekend there is a celebration of opera in Ephraim at the village hall.  They will have performances both tonight and tomorrow night.

Birch Creek also has concerts at their music performance center, and this next week is mostly big band music.

So if you have time in the next few weeks it’s a great time to come and enjoy some quality music in a quality place!  We would be glad to have you stay with us at High Point Inn.

On a Warm Summer’s Night in Door County…

In Door County August is known for the warmth it brings.  Right now at High Point Inn the outdoor pool has been busy, with temperatures close to 90.  This is the perfect time to hit the beach or the pool!  The other upside of these hot days is that the evenings bring with it a nice refreshing air.  Here are a few ideas of what to do on one of these beautiful evenings on the Door Peninsula.

1.) Get some ice cream!  It may be cooler out but it’s a nice refreshing treat after a day of sun!  Both Wilson’s and Door County Ice Cream Factory offer delicious ice cream choices.

2.) Take a nice stroll through your favorite town (this can be combined with the ice cream of course).

3.) Just sit back and take it all in.  Stargazing is always a great relaxing activity.

4.) Enjoy a refreshing drink out on your very own patio.

5.) Go mini golfing

Now these are just a few ideas of what you can do, the main thing is to get out and enjoy!

Sunshine in Door County!

It appears that the clouds have finally broken here in Door County, leaving a positive outlook for the weekend.  From here at High Point Inn I can see the sun pouring in through the windows and reflecting off the pools.  After so many clouds the past couple days this is a welcome sight.  The good news is it looks like this is our forecast for the weekend!

With sunshine and highs around 80 it is the perfect time to make a quick trip to the Door Peninsula for some outdoor recreation.  There are many parks and beaches to choose from.

This is also a great time to visit one of Door County’s outdoor theatres.  This weekend Door Shakespeare, which is located in the garden at Bjorklunden, is starting their 2010 season.  There is also American Folklore Theatre in Peninsula State Park , which is great for the whole family, and Peninsula Players off the shoreline in Fish Creek.  The Players offer a great sunset view before the performances.  (Just remember the bug spray.)

Even if you just choose to relax by the lake or the pool, it is looking like a beautiful weekend to be out and about in Door County!
