A Snow covered Door County! Better late than never they say!

Winter Wonderland: The courtyard at High Point Inn on March 3rd

Within just a few days the scenery in Door County  has changed completely!  We were beginning to get spoiled here with the spring-like days and mild weather patterns; a winter where hikes were more common than skiing or snow-shoeing!  We have yet to see how long this full snow coverage will last, but now is the time to enjoy the beauty of winter in Wisconsin!  The main roads have now been cleared after the storm; it isn’t too late to come join us in Ephraim at the cozy High Point Inn!

A Sunny May Day in Door County!

Today has been one of those spring days you wish you could hold onto.  In Door County the sun has been shining all day, the birds have been busy and people are taking the time to sit out and enjoy the day!

Soaking up the sun at the High Point Inn

The trees are blooming and soon cherry blossoms will be just around the corner!  There is much to see and do here in Door County now that the roads are clear and the sun is shining!  Even if you just want to sit back and relax, this is a beautiful time to see the Door Peninsula!

At High Point Inn we invite you to join us this spring and relax on your own private patio or on our front porch that is perfect for days like today!  Make sure to check out our spring specials on our website and join us in celebrating the long awaited arrival of spring!

Birding in Door County: a reminder of spring

Even with the recent snow fall here in Door County there are still hints of spring all over the peninsula.  One of these reminders of spring is the birds that have returned.  In the morning you can hear the blend of bird songs and see them flying between trees.

Birding in Door County can be a year round activity but starting in the spring and through the summer there are many varieties of birds to be seen.  One great place to visit and bring the family to learn and see more is Peninsula State Park.  This park features a great nature program that includes guided hikes and the White Cedar Nature Center.   On April 16th there is a specific hike that will be spent looking for certain species at Weborg Marsh.  There are also other great State Parks to choose from for making your own birding experience.

I personally recommend visiting as many parks as you can and also taking a scenic drive along the many Door County back roads.  You never know what you might see!  Lately I have had a very beautiful cardinal visiting my feeder in-between the many loyal chickadees that stayed through the winter.

Come join us this spring at High Point Inn!  You can even sit and look for birds (or just find some peace and quiet) on your own private patio.

A Fresh New Layer of Snow in Door County

Right now on the quiet and peaceful Door Peninsula there is a soft snow fall to match.  In Door County we have not had near the same amount of snow that has left many snowed in across the state, but we have gotten enough to remind us that it is, in fact, still winter in Wisconsin.

With this most recent snow fall it looks as if we will have enough snow to really get out there and cross-country ski!  For updated ski reports go to Peninsula Pulse’s website for the Cross-Country Ski Report

The snow is also brightening up the peninsula and covering the brown that was recently uncovered, leaving wonderful sight seeing! You can take a scenic drive or simply pick your favorite coffee shop and take it all in over a warm drink.  For cozy drinks with a great view try Blue Horse Bistro & Espresso in Fish Creek or Espresso Lane in Baileys Harbor.

If you can get away come join us at High Point Inn for a relaxing stay!  We have some great winter specials going on now, make sure to check out our website for more information or call us at 1-800-595-6894.

A Positive Outlook on Negative Temperatures in Door County

As in most of Wisconsin, here in Door County we have been experiencing some very cold temperatures.  It is true that the cold can be hard to face when we have to run outside to get something, or hop into a vehicle that has yet to warm up, but there is a positive side to these colder than cold temperatures.  Here are some ways to see the positive in these negative temperatures!

1) The cold weather makes a great excuse to stay in bed a little longer, enjoying the warmth of the sun without the coldness of the air.

2) With the bitter cold it is easy to feel guilt free while staying indoors and enjoying a great book while sitting by a warm fire, or bundled up on the sofa.

3) The cold weather may keep us indoors, but it keeps us indoors together!  Family time can flourish in the cold temperatures with great board games, tasty treats and little chats.

4) A fine warm dinner tastes even better.  Sitting back with a nice glass of wine and a tasty entree while watching the weather outside is very satisfying!

Today on the Door Peninsula I saw a family out for coffee and hot chocolate at Base Camp coffee shop after a day of sledding on Hill 17.  It was a reminder of how the winter can bring people together.

Here at High Point Inn the fireplace has been on and everyone’s gathered together.  Puzzles have been put together, games of checkers and ping-pong have been going all day, the pool and hot tub have been active with families and everyone’s smiling!

So don’t let the weather get you down!  This is the time for some quiet relaxation and family bonding!

Cozy Indoor and Fun Outdoor Winter Activities in Door County: don’t let the lack of snow slow you down!

The snow is slowly settling back onto the frozen fields of the Door County landscape.  Unfortunately the accumulation is still not enough to get snowmobilers and cross country skiers back on the trail, but on the bright side it IS enough to add to the winter scenery.  Even with a lack of snow the beauty of the door peninsula remains; the trees and fields are touched with white and the ice and snow have created formations along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Here are some ideas from High Point Inn on what to do when skiing, sledding and snowmobiling are not an option.

1) Go for a hike in one of our beautiful state parks!  Put on a pair of warm boots and enjoy the trails even if it’s not on a pair of cross country skis.

2) Attend one of the shows at the Door Community Auditorium.  They have a series of Fireside Coffeehouse concerts and a Souper Movies series that just requires canned food donations to get in.

3) Visit a winery or two.  The wineries offer great selection and a pleasant way to warm up on a cold winters day.  Stones Throw Winery even offers chocolate and wine pairing.

4) Create your own art!  Make a fun stop at Hands on Art Studio and make your own Door County inspired artwork.

5)  RELAX!  The beauty of Door County at this time of year is that it is quiet and peaceful.  Let relaxation soak in while sitting in front of a warm fireplace, reading a book, sipping a glass of wine or soaking in the whirlpool.

With the snow slowly returning make sure to keep an eye on the ski trail conditions at http://winterindoorcounty.com/!  We could be back on the trails soon!
