High Point Neighbors: Fine Line Designs Artist Reception This Weekend

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Fine Line Designs Gallery is one of our favorite places in Door County and we think their contemporary collection of art is something everyone would appreciate. The gallery is featuring a reception Thursday and we think you should go. If you can’t make it to the opening reception, we think you should stop by and visit this exhibit.

From Shari Gransee at Fine Line Designs Gallery – right next door!

Two of Door County’s beloved female artists, oil painter Pamela Murphy and ceramic sculptor Stephanie Evans, will exhibit their work together in Fine Line Design Gallery’s third exhibit of the 2012 season. The opening reception of Exhibit III is scheduled for Thursday, July 12 from 4-7 pm, with both artists on hand to discuss their newest work.

Pamela Murphy’s collection of old photographs she discovered at a garage sale has provided an endless stream of inspiration for her oil paintings. “I understood how they ended up there,” she says. “If someone is unable to remember the details of the photograph, the people in them eventually become strangers.” Wanting the memories of the photograph’s subjects to live on, Murphy began using the figures from the images as her “models.” She paints the figures on a textured canvas, which is created by sanding and scraping different layers of paint. Murphy says the distressed quality of the painting’s background lends a sense of time and place to the works.

Like a writer conveys characters and setting through the medium of words, sculptor Stephanie Evans creates history and stories through the medium of clay, specifically through the protagonist of the dress form. “I utilize the form as a vessel for the adornments I place both inside and outside the sculpture,” she says. “These objects, reliefs, and textures combine to tell the story of the imagined wearer’s personal thoughts and desires.”

The symbolism that exists in these embellishments reflects the complex identities of her sculptures.

A Snow covered Door County! Better late than never they say!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Winter Wonderland: The courtyard at High Point Inn on March 3rd

Within just a few days the scenery in Door County  has changed completely!  We were beginning to get spoiled here with the spring-like days and mild weather patterns; a winter where hikes were more common than skiing or snow-shoeing!  We have yet to see how long this full snow coverage will last, but now is the time to enjoy the beauty of winter in Wisconsin!  The main roads have now been cleared after the storm; it isn’t too late to come join us in Ephraim at the cozy High Point Inn!

A Midsummer’s Eve in Door County’s Historic Ephraim!

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

One of the beauties of Ephraim is its ability to conserve a connection to the past.  The Ephraim Historical Foundation is an important part of the village of Ephraim.  The foundation helps keep the museums alive with interactive tours, to delve into Ephraim’s rich past and of course to continue the traditional festivals.

This coming weekend is the Fyr Ball festival.  This is a celebration of Midsummer’s Eve that follows many Norwegian traditions.

This year is looking to be even more exciting than years past!  There is live music, food, arts and crafts, a used book sale, fireworks, bonfires along the water and more!  This year there will even be amusement rides right next to the Red Putter, our neighbor here at High Point Inn.

This is a great time to bring the family to Door County for a fun filled weekend!  Join us at High Point Inn and you will just be a short walk or a trolley ride away from all the excitement!  We have the outdoor and indoor pool ready and the gas grills all set up!

Make sure to check out Ephraim’s website with all the details of the event!

High Point Inn Celebrates the poetry of Barbara Larsen

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Sponsored by the High Point Inn Poetry Contest

Barbara Larsen of Sister Bay has been named Door County’s Poet Laureate for 2011. Larsen who has published 6 volumes of poetry, finds inspiration in Door County’s natural beauty. Her duties as Poet Laureate encompass something she has been doing since moving to Door County in 1986 – sharing her love of the written word with the people of her community.

In an April 14, 2011 Peninsula Pulse article Gary Jones gives us a glimpse of the passion Larsen feels for poetry:

In some respects Larsen has been functioning as an informal poet laureate for years. She has published six volumes of her verse (two with illustrations by Gretchen Maring); wrote Trilogy, poetry that was set to music and performed by the Peninsula Chamber Singers; and has offered poetry writing workshops at The Clearing, Bjorklunden, Scandia Village, and Gibraltar Schools. She is active in two writing groups that she helped to found, the Wallace Group and Unabridged Poets.

Her work has been published in a number of journals, including Free Verse (now Verse Wisconsin), Rag Mag, the Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar, and the Wisconsin People and Ideas Magazine. She has won awards in the Peninsula Pulse Hal Grutzmacher poetry writing contest, and in 1995 received the Jade Ring for poetry in a competition sponsored by the Wisconsin Regional Writers Association.

Barbara Larsen is going to spend 2011 as Door County’s poet evangelist and we will be a richer community because of her work. Larsen will serve a two-year term and is expected to compose poems related to the community and for special occasions, as well as serving as the community’s “literary ambassador.”

Birding in Door County: a reminder of spring

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Even with the recent snow fall here in Door County there are still hints of spring all over the peninsula.  One of these reminders of spring is the birds that have returned.  In the morning you can hear the blend of bird songs and see them flying between trees.

Birding in Door County can be a year round activity but starting in the spring and through the summer there are many varieties of birds to be seen.  One great place to visit and bring the family to learn and see more is Peninsula State Park.  This park features a great nature program that includes guided hikes and the White Cedar Nature Center.   On April 16th there is a specific hike that will be spent looking for certain species at Weborg Marsh.  There are also other great State Parks to choose from for making your own birding experience.

I personally recommend visiting as many parks as you can and also taking a scenic drive along the many Door County back roads.  You never know what you might see!  Lately I have had a very beautiful cardinal visiting my feeder in-between the many loyal chickadees that stayed through the winter.

Come join us this spring at High Point Inn!  You can even sit and look for birds (or just find some peace and quiet) on your own private patio.

A Fresh New Layer of Snow in Door County

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Right now on the quiet and peaceful Door Peninsula there is a soft snow fall to match.  In Door County we have not had near the same amount of snow that has left many snowed in across the state, but we have gotten enough to remind us that it is, in fact, still winter in Wisconsin.

With this most recent snow fall it looks as if we will have enough snow to really get out there and cross-country ski!  For updated ski reports go to Peninsula Pulse’s website for the Cross-Country Ski Report

The snow is also brightening up the peninsula and covering the brown that was recently uncovered, leaving wonderful sight seeing! You can take a scenic drive or simply pick your favorite coffee shop and take it all in over a warm drink.  For cozy drinks with a great view try Blue Horse Bistro & Espresso in Fish Creek or Espresso Lane in Baileys Harbor.

If you can get away come join us at High Point Inn for a relaxing stay!  We have some great winter specials going on now, make sure to check out our website for more information or call us at 1-800-595-6894.
