Make Door County’s Peninsula Pub part of your New Year’s Resolution

penpub_hpi

New Year’s Resolutions are filled with thoughts of working out, eating better, making time for the family, and maybe running a half marathon – if you’re got spare time. While these are all noble pursuits, why not pursue something tasty and delicious – something located in Door County that can get your New Year off to a great start? Head to the Peninsula Pub in Egg Harbor for their burger of the day and a Bloody Mary to wash it down.

The slogan of the Peninsula Pub is “People Pleasing Pub with Personality Plus.” and owners Kyle and Faye Blank take this slogan seriously. While a burger and a “Bloody” may not sound like conventional New Year’s eve fare, we think conventional needs to be tossed to the wind sometimes. Plus this is no ordinary burger and cocktail combo. The Peninsula Pub offers a special burger of the day. And we guarantee that burger (like no other) is not for the faint of heart. I suggest you take on the burger of the day. For as a Scottish friend likes to remind me “the stuffed feeling in your stomach is reward for a well done meal.”

In addition to their great burgers, the PenPub has been voted Door County’s favorite Friday fish fry by Door County Magazine readers.  Check out their menu and while you’re there, say hi to one of the owners – High Point Inn’s own fabulous Faye Blank!

A Fresh New Layer of Snow in Door County

Right now on the quiet and peaceful Door Peninsula there is a soft snow fall to match.  In Door County we have not had near the same amount of snow that has left many snowed in across the state, but we have gotten enough to remind us that it is, in fact, still winter in Wisconsin.

With this most recent snow fall it looks as if we will have enough snow to really get out there and cross-country ski!  For updated ski reports go to Peninsula Pulse’s website for the Cross-Country Ski Report

The snow is also brightening up the peninsula and covering the brown that was recently uncovered, leaving wonderful sight seeing! You can take a scenic drive or simply pick your favorite coffee shop and take it all in over a warm drink.  For cozy drinks with a great view try Blue Horse Bistro & Espresso in Fish Creek or Espresso Lane in Baileys Harbor.

If you can get away come join us at High Point Inn for a relaxing stay!  We have some great winter specials going on now, make sure to check out our website for more information or call us at 1-800-595-6894.

Winter in Door County: Coffee and Baked Goods at Base Camp in Sister Bay

basecamp

Joel and Alicia Kersebet have two thriving businesses in Sister Bay. Ecology Sport and Base Camp Coffee. Both share an historic building that was once the Town Shop of Liberty Grove at the north end of Sister Bay. Base Camp Coffee is located in the basement of the building and features coffee and Espresso drinks, and menu items starring Joel’s exquisite baked goods – all made onsite. Today’s menu included Artichoke Strata, Squash and Lentil Chili as well as French (Joel hails from France) style bakery including melt in your mouth croissants and hearty scones.

Upstairs you can find clothing and gifts for the active lifestyle. Headed on a vacation that includes walking tours? Ecology Sport has the proper footwear as well as clothing that will travel well in any climate. Both businesses are open year round with a break in March.

And after a busy day hiking the roads or skiing the trails of northern Door County, relax in your suite at the High Point Inn in Ephraim. Maybe that includes a glass of wine in front of the fireplace or perhaps a soak in the in-room whirlpool. Book a room for our Valentine’s special or call ahead to watch the Super Bowl in your suite on HDTV! Bring your own Packer pennants!

A Positive Outlook on Negative Temperatures in Door County

As in most of Wisconsin, here in Door County we have been experiencing some very cold temperatures.  It is true that the cold can be hard to face when we have to run outside to get something, or hop into a vehicle that has yet to warm up, but there is a positive side to these colder than cold temperatures.  Here are some ways to see the positive in these negative temperatures!

1) The cold weather makes a great excuse to stay in bed a little longer, enjoying the warmth of the sun without the coldness of the air.

2) With the bitter cold it is easy to feel guilt free while staying indoors and enjoying a great book while sitting by a warm fire, or bundled up on the sofa.

3) The cold weather may keep us indoors, but it keeps us indoors together!  Family time can flourish in the cold temperatures with great board games, tasty treats and little chats.

4) A fine warm dinner tastes even better.  Sitting back with a nice glass of wine and a tasty entree while watching the weather outside is very satisfying!

Today on the Door Peninsula I saw a family out for coffee and hot chocolate at Base Camp coffee shop after a day of sledding on Hill 17.  It was a reminder of how the winter can bring people together.

Here at High Point Inn the fireplace has been on and everyone’s gathered together.  Puzzles have been put together, games of checkers and ping-pong have been going all day, the pool and hot tub have been active with families and everyone’s smiling!

So don’t let the weather get you down!  This is the time for some quiet relaxation and family bonding!

A Door County Winter Wonderland: a perfect weekend to getaway!

Although we got snow in Door County at the beginning of December, nothing was really sticking… but at this very moment the peninsula has become completely white with snow!  It has come in time for all the fun winter activities that are going on here this weekend!  If you are in need of some holiday fun in Door County here are some great ideas!

1) TAPworks Kids Production is performing Miracle on 34th Street this weekend!

2) At the Ridges Sanctuary it is the Ridges Natural Christmas; there will be crafts, beautiful hikes and tasty treats!

3) Go to the Renaissance Christmas Concert at Birch Creek for some holiday music and good company.

4) Take a Winter Wonderland trolley tour!  This includes 2 winery stops, a sleigh ride and a cozy lunch at the White Gull Inn!

This is looking to a fun weekend in Door County!  Make sure to check out the High Point Inn website for our web only special and make a special winter get away!

Eagle Harbor in Historic Ephraim

Here at High Point Inn we are a short drive from Eagle Harbor.  This particular harbor offers beautiful sunsets, a view of Peninsula State Park across the way, and a great place to stroll and listen to the waves. Although the December temperatures are approaching this is still a great place to visit.

One of the reasons this is such a great time to see Eagle Harbor is there have been swan sightings recently.  The swans just enhance the beauty of the water and the surrounding shore.

While taking in these great views of Eagle Harbor there are a few great places to stop and warm up.  There is a quaint coffee shop in town called Leroy’s located in the Water Street Shops.  If you are looking to grab a bite to eat The Chef’s Hat is also open offering breakfast, lunch and dinner.  There are also some shops open for browsing and perhaps getting some of that holiday shopping taken care of.

Believe it or not this is a great time to visit Door County!  It may be quiet but the nature of the Door Peninsula is great year round!
