A day in the life of a Door County Autumn Mid-Week Guest….

Autumn weekdays in Door County are something to be treasured. The beauty is the same but the setting offers a friendly but relaxed attitude. There is something to be said about getting a table right away at Al Johnson’s and not having to salivate while your watching other people with their pancakes.

However, just because the hustle and bustle is gone doesn’t mean there are any less activities going on!

After waking up to a great nights sleep at High Point Inn a crisp autumn morning greets you while you brew your first morning coffee. The leaves changing on the trees look particularly beautiful this morning so you decide to head to Newport State Park for a peaceful walk. The trails are quieter there but no less impressive than Peninsula State Park.

After your hike you’re feeling relaxed and a bit more stimulated. You’re stomach is growling and only The Viking Grill can satisfy it! You drive back south and stop in for some fuel for the day’s activities.

Traffic has slowed down which makes traveling between towns and villages much faster! It’s a secret only the locales know. You’re able to hit more shops and galleries than when you visit in the summer. Which is great for you! Maybe not so much for your partner. You decide to reward them with a tasty burger and a Wisconsin beer at the Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor.

You’ve had a full day of activities but aren’t done yet! You decide to head back to High Point Inn for a wee nap. Don’t forget you’re on vacation! You deserve a nap.

This evening you and your partner are going to Peninsula Players to see their fall show “Miracle on South Division Street”. The play is under cover so there is no need to worry about rain! However, before you head there you drop in to Mr. Helsinki’s for a few appetizers and drinks. The atmosphere is great, you could sit there all night but there is a play to be seen!

You’ve had a fun packed and full day in Door County and now it’s off to bed! It’s a good thing you’re staying at High Point Inn! You aren’t sure what adventures you want to get up to tomorrow. You’re on vacation though and there is nothing wrong with sleeping in and enjoying the amenities High Point Inn has to offer!

Peninsula Century Ride chooses GO BO Foundation as official charity partner

The High Point Inn is proud to be a sponsor of The Peninsula Century. Door County’s newest bicycle ride has chosen the GO BO Foundation as its charitable partner in it’s September 14 inaugural outing. Here is the description of the ride from their website:

The Peninsula Century will feature routes of 25, 50, 62, and 100 miles through the rolling hills and past the incredible water views of Northern Door County. With a grand roll-out start in Sister Bay from the village’s new Waterfront Park, riders will start within walking distance of the area’s best lodging.

With six aid stations, a post-ride meal and beer, and live music at the finish in Waterfront Park, this ride will have everything you’ll need for a fantastic experience at Door County’s beautiful northern shores.

The ride is capped at 1,200 riders to ensure a safe experience for cyclists and motorists in year one. Participants will finish back at Waterfront Park, where they’ll enjoy post-ride festivities on the water and soak in the Sister Bay sunset just steps from bars, restaurants and shopping.

Sounds like a great activity to celebrate the transition from a Door County summer to a Door County fall.

AND the Peninsula Century could not find a better charitable partner than the GO BO Foundation. Bo Johnson, for whom the charity is named, fought a battle with acute myeloid leukemia that ended last September. The inspirational manner in which Bo lived his life and dealt with his illness touches everyone who learns about it.

We also think Bo would have been delighted to be associated with The Peninsula Century. The ride encompasses 3 things that were important in his life: an athletic event, the great outdoors of northern Door AND a Sister Bay sunset!

We think you will be delighted with this event too. Sign up here. Rider info here.

And kudos to Brian Fitzgerald and team for their newest event that celebrates the great outdoors of northern Door County!

High Point Inn Neighbors: The Bead Bucket at the Shorewood Village Shops in Ephraim

Stop in and see Tera Rossman, owner of The Bead Bucket

Door County is full of charming shops for browsing and buying. One of our favorite charming shops is located in Ephraim near Leroy’s Water Street Coffee - The Bead Bucket. Owner Tera Rossman has accumulated an impressive array of materials with which DIY aficionados can assemble funky, beautiful beaded jewelry. The Bead Bucket also offers many pre-made items – earrings, necklaces and more – that will be a perfect gift for a loved one or yourself!

We recommend you grab a coffee beverage at Leroy’s and head on over to see Tera at The Bead Bucket where you can browse the materials you need for your next masterpiece.

Active activities at Fyr Bal

fyr bal (600 x 857)

Ephraim’s 49th annual Fyr Bal festival is this coming weekend, the 14th thru the 16th.  This year’s schedule of events contains new activities to the shore of Eagle Harbor.  Of course the main event of the weekend is the tradition bonfires lining the shores of Eagle Harbor (official lighting begins at 8:30) and the fireworks to comence after sunset (approximately 9:30), which are both a definate must see. But here are some other activities I’m excited to see on the schedule, and I think are worth checking out:

-Guided hikes at Anderson pond nature preserve.  I recently learned the location of Anderson pond and think it’s a little gem hidden in Ephraim that not many people are aware of.

-Stand up paddle board races at the Ephraim Kayak Center, located on South Shore Pier.  This is my favorite water sport, and the crew at the kayak center are super friendly and helpful getting you on on of these things! Be sure to partake in this excellent activity.

sup (800 x 602)

-High Point Inn is happy to sponsor a groovy line-up of live music occuring both at the village hall and harbor side park all day long on Saturday.

-Anytime on Saturday walk next door to Red Putter for a round of mini-golf for a special fyr bal rate!

-Free Body Flow and Zumba classes at Anderson Dock.  For the early active risers, registration is at 7:15 a.m. Enjoy a fun class and a great view of the harbor.

Hitch a ride with the Door County Trolly, giving free rides all day long.  You won’t have the hassel of finding parking, just walk next door to our neighbors Fine Line Designs and hop on the trolly, they’ll be going back and forth till 5 pm.

Our smiling front desk staff will be happy to hook you up with a schedule of events and answer any questions you might have.

Door County Segway Feng Shui

segway2 6.10.13 (800 x 598)

“look mom, no hands!”

I enjoyed my first ever segway ride this past Monday.  Friends who work at the English Inn, and I treated our beloved English Inn compadre to a segway tour through Peninsula State Park for his 17th birthday.  The tour, lead by Segway the Door tour guide Linda, was super helpful getting us comfortable on the segway in the beginning, helping us through some of the more difficult terrain, and leading us through the park and highlighting great vistas.  It was a wonderful and fun way to explore the park.  My favorite part was sighting a plethera of Door County wildflowers dotting the roadways: trilliums, forget-me-knots, and lily of the valley.

my companions lagging behind

To see the peninsula from a different perspective, try something new and tour the peninsula on a segway. Segway the Door tours also have tours in Bailey’s Harbor, Egg Harbor, Elison Bay, Sturgeon Bay, and Cavepoint in Jacksonport (can’t wait to go explore Cavepoint on a segway).

Door County Light House Festival

Live Music in the Park

June is here, and this month kicks off a plethera of opportunities to hear live music all over the Door County Peninsula.  The best part of live music in the summertime is all of the outdoor venues to enjoy.  What better way to enjoy Door County’s beautiful natural vistas?

High Point Inn is a happy sponser of Evenings in Ephraim, a concert in the park music series located at Harborside Park in downtown Ephraim. Enjoy live music while watching the sunset over Eagle Harbor every Monday evening! Check out their website for a full schedule of performers and dates.
