A Fun Packed Door County Weekend

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Come join us at High Point Inn for an eventful weekend!

The weekend is upon us and the Door Peninsula is full of activity.  Despite the rain today there were many people out and about throughout the county.  I even spotted some bikers and walkers out in the rain. Along with the usual activities, this weekend has some special events.

For one, Steel Bridge Songfest is underway with various musicians performing throughout the weekend in historic Sturgeon Bay.

It is also the lighthouse walk weekend.   There are guided tours provided by the Door County Maritime Museum that visit the many lighthouses.  Self-guided tours are another option; with most of the lighthouses open for regular season visitors it is possible to visit them on your own time.

In Fish Creek they are celebrating Heritage days with tours, music, art, food and even a Saturday evening dance.

This is just a sample of all that is going on in Door County this weekend.  Come join us at High Point Inn for all the fun, but make sure to leave some time for sitting back and relaxing!

Door County’s White Gull Inn in the national spotlight

Friday, May 14th, 2010
Vote for Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast from the White Gull Inn of Fish Creek!

Vote for Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast from the White Gull Inn of Fish Creek!

Kudos to a well known Door County Restaurant in Fish Creek! The White Gull Inn received national recognition from ABC television’s iconic morning show “Good Morning America” and their contest to determine America’s best breakfast. The breakfast menu nominated for the contest is Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast (see picture above and drool).

From Jeff Alexander at WBAY television in Green Bay:

A quaint Door County inn is headed for the national spotlight.

A crew from ABC’s “Good Morning America” spent the day there sampling one of its soon-to-be famous breakfast specials.

It’s one of the most exciting days in the White Gull Inn’s 114-year history, and around Fish Creek, the locals spread the word.

“They wanted to be here, they wanted to be part of this, and we started having a line out there. The first people showed up at quarter to 7 for a 7:30 opening, and by 7:30 we filled all 25 tables. It was like a festive event,” the inn’s Andy Coulson said.

Last Friday, Andy and Jan Coulson received a call from Good Morning America saying their inn had been chosen as one of four finalists for ABC’s Best Breakfast Challenge, with feature correspondent Marysol Castro.

“I’m happy they waited ’til Friday to let us know, because I think if we had any more time to think about it we would really be a nervous wreck,” Jan Coulson said.

The episode will be aired on Saturday, May 15 at 7 am (CST).

There are 3 other finalists but NONE could possibly be as good as the White Gull Inn!

Immediately after the segment airs on Saturday, May 15 voting will begin. To vote go to http://abcnews.go.com/gma and click a link that says, “VOTE FOR THE BEST BREAKFAST“. The link is NOT there yet but will be on Saturday May 15 following broadcast.  You can vote until 7 pm (CST).

Win or lose this contest, the White Gull Inn will remain a favorite to Door County visitors and locals alike.

A Door County scene you should NOT miss! The drive to Ephraim up Hwy. 42

ephraimatnite

Here is an idea for a gorgeous road trip for anyone who thinks winter has little to offer. Jump in your car and head to the beautiful village of Ephraim in Door County, Wisconsin. When you are just north of Sturgeon Bay take the very picturesque Hwy. 42 route to northern Door. Along the way you will pass through Carlsville home to several fine restaurants and shops. Next you will pass through the village of Egg Harbor, a great place to pull over and explore - even in winter! Call ahead to the Main Street Market and pick up a basket of luscious cheeses, fruits, and wines, perfect for your final destination.

Seven minutes out of Egg Harbor is the drive-by destination of Juddville. Though small, Juddville boasts several art galleries, a restaurant and coming soon - a chiropractic practice! As you head towards Ephraim, Fish Creek is the next scenic village and offers year round visitors  the chance to shop and eat at several distinctive restaurants. Hide Side Leather and On Deck Sportswear are open in winter and are worth a visit.

Finally. Ephraim is near. As you approach the village from the south, you pass by the outstanding golf course at Peninsula State Park on your left. Your vehicle will descend a slight hill and before you will be the beauty of Eagle Harbor, truly one of Door County’s most scenic sites. The view at night (see photo above) in winter is that of a charming historic village opening its arms to all who pass through. You will not find most businesses open during the winter months, but the village hall in the center of town features sing-a-longs on Sundays that reminds you music can be a participation sport for the masses!

Drive through Ephraim-proper and you will find yourself in North Ephraim a tree-lined drive past galleries and shops that lead you to your final destination…the High Point Inn. Unpack your car, walk through the door and you will experience for yourself why our resort boasts a high rate of return for previous guests. Our facilities and our staff will make your winter getaway to the Door peninsula one to remember.

Ready for a road trip now? Call us at 920-854-9773 or email and we will help you plan the perfect winter vacation in our quaint Door County setting.
