From High Point Inn here in Door County it is just a short drive south to Fish Creek. Fish Creek offers a little more hustle and bustle, which provides a great atmosphere for walking, shopping and people watching.
On a warm evening it is nice to park the car on the north side of town and walk to the restaurants and shops of downtown Fish Creek. (The sidewalks are even lined with orange and yellow marigolds.) The shops are conveniently open later and there is also a great variety to choose from.
Fish Creek also has some great places to sit out and have a nice relaxing beverage or dinner. The other evening I visited The Cookery, which has a great wine bar upstairs and full restaurant downstairs. The wine bar offers appetizers and a beautiful birds eye view of the water and the sidewalks.
If you get tired of walking there is also a pedicab service in Fish Creek. Peninsula Pedicabs is just a phone call away for a nice ride through town or back to your car.
An evening in Fish Creek makes for an eventful night, especially at this time of year. Come join us while the evenings are still warm!

The stores have taken on their yearly August transformation. Yellow displays filled with notebooks, pencils, folders and all sorts of back to school goodies are taking over. But it’s not too late to get the family together for one last trip before the school year begins!
The High Point Inn offers a great place for families to stay. Our 2 bedroom units offer a nice comfortable area for the whole family to be together. We also have ping-pong, a game room, more games in the lobby and an indoor and outdoor pool. Plus there is mini golfing at the Red Putter just a short walk away and fun family restaurants close by.
Make a trip to Door County for a great escape before the school year sets in. It is a great place to sit back, relax and forget about things for a bit!

In Door County August is known for the warmth it brings. Right now at High Point Inn the outdoor pool has been busy, with temperatures close to 90. This is the perfect time to hit the beach or the pool! The other upside of these hot days is that the evenings bring with it a nice refreshing air. Here are a few ideas of what to do on one of these beautiful evenings on the Door Peninsula.
1.) Get some ice cream! It may be cooler out but it’s a nice refreshing treat after a day of sun! Both Wilson’s and Door County Ice Cream Factory offer delicious ice cream choices.
2.) Take a nice stroll through your favorite town (this can be combined with the ice cream of course).
3.) Just sit back and take it all in. Stargazing is always a great relaxing activity.
4.) Enjoy a refreshing drink out on your very own patio.
5.) Go mini golfing
Now these are just a few ideas of what you can do, the main thing is to get out and enjoy!

On a warm day in Door County there are many ways to cool down and relax. There are beaches where you can spend the day in the sun and cool off in the lake. At High Point Inn we have an outdoor pool that is great for lounging and cooling off. There are also many parks with wonderful shaded hiking and biking trails. However, the best way to cool down (in my opinion) is with an ice cream cone and a sunset.
Once the sun starts to go down and the heavy heat of the day has passed it is the perfect time to head to your favorite ice cream shop and go for a nice stroll to the water to watch the sun set.
In Ephraim, Wilson’s is the ideal place to get your favorite flavor of ice cream and watch the sunset. Just across the street there are benches lined up along the shore. From here there is a great view of the harbor, and the bluffs create a beautiful contrast to the colors of the sunset.
There are many different locations to choose from, so you might have to leave a couple nights open for ice cream and sunsets! Join us at High Point Inn and we’d be happy to give some more suggestions.

This weekend Al Johnson, the Door County entrepreneur who put goats on his roof and in doing so helped bring tourists to Door County passed away. Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant was almost always on visitors “must go” list since he opened his doors in 1949. In honor of this iconic man who did so much to promote Door County as a tourist destination, we are providing a few links that will only scratch the surface of what he meant to Sister Bay and the Door peninsula:
From Myles Dannhausen, Jr. at the Peninsula Pulse:
His restaurant was one of northern Door County’s largest employers. Countless area kids paid for their college educations with paychecks earned beneath Al’s famous grass roof. When former workers fell on hard times, he found a place for them, even if they had once left on bad terms.
His staff benefitted from the kind of security and perks rarely seen in the restaurant or tourism industries, helping employees make a life and raise a family in Northern Door. The tips earned by his waitresses have long been the envy of colleagues at other establishments. Those workers have spread their income around the village and the county, filling bars with dirndls (to the delight of many a visitor), and spending on groceries, clothing, and homes.
Photos and notes from the 60th anniversary celebration that took place in Sister Bay last summer.
And finally, an audio podcast interview with his great friend Norb Blei that took place in February of 2007. For anyone under the impression that Al Johnson was a reserved, stoic person, listen to this interview for some stories about a life that was lived with gusto, grace and more than a bit of mischief.
Our thoughts go out to Al’s family and his many dear friends.

How do you enjoy a lazy Saturday in Door County? Here are some suggestions from Ephraim’s High Point Inn.
1) Start your morning out right and prepare a nice relaxing breakfast in your own suite with a full kitchen. Enjoy while taking in the scenery from your deck.
2) Take a short drive to one of our nearby state parks. Choose from: Peninsula State Park, Newport State Park, or Whitefish Dunes State Park where you can hike or bike your way around.
3) Stop in Ephraim at Leroy’s Water Street Coffee where you can refuel with your choice of a coffee or espresso drink and perhaps a small bakery snack while relaxing in the shade.
4) Head back to the resort for a nice dip in the pool and a soak in the hot tub.
5) After a quick snooze head down the street to Green Gables to explore their quaint Door County shops.
6) Now it’s time to enjoy dinner out at your favorite Door County restaurant.
7) One last thing to top off your relaxing Door County Saturday… head to Wilson’s for a scoop of your favorite ice cream and a take a stroll along the shoreline.
So come join us at High Point Inn for your next lazy Saturday!

Vote for Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast from the White Gull Inn of Fish Creek!
Kudos to a well known Door County Restaurant in Fish Creek! The White Gull Inn received national recognition from ABC television’s iconic morning show “Good Morning America” and their contest to determine America’s best breakfast. The breakfast menu nominated for the contest is Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast (see picture above and drool).
From Jeff Alexander at WBAY television in Green Bay:
A quaint Door County inn is headed for the national spotlight.
A crew from ABC’s “Good Morning America” spent the day there sampling one of its soon-to-be famous breakfast specials.
It’s one of the most exciting days in the White Gull Inn’s 114-year history, and around Fish Creek, the locals spread the word.
“They wanted to be here, they wanted to be part of this, and we started having a line out there. The first people showed up at quarter to 7 for a 7:30 opening, and by 7:30 we filled all 25 tables. It was like a festive event,” the inn’s Andy Coulson said.
Last Friday, Andy and Jan Coulson received a call from Good Morning America saying their inn had been chosen as one of four finalists for ABC’s Best Breakfast Challenge, with feature correspondent Marysol Castro.
“I’m happy they waited ’til Friday to let us know, because I think if we had any more time to think about it we would really be a nervous wreck,” Jan Coulson said.
The episode will be aired on Saturday, May 15 at 7 am (CST).
There are 3 other finalists but NONE could possibly be as good as the White Gull Inn!
Immediately after the segment airs on Saturday, May 15 voting will begin. To vote go to http://abcnews.go.com/gma and click a link that says, “VOTE FOR THE BEST BREAKFAST“. The link is NOT there yet but will be on Saturday May 15 following broadcast. You can vote until 7 pm (CST).
Win or lose this contest, the White Gull Inn will remain a favorite to Door County visitors and locals alike.
